Event trends in the UAE (and beyond)

With summer about to hit in Abu Dhabi the first half of the year is well and truly behind us, however there are some event trends which are set to stay with us till the end of 2019.

Sustainability

With the ever increasing pressure on businesses and suppliers to be eco friendly, given the startling warnings around plastic use and the environment, a trend that is on the up is running sustainable events.

Clients are moving away from disposable plates and cutlery at events in favour of reusable items, and are looking at alternatives for balloon decorations.

Personally I think this a favourable trend and one which all event professionals can look to achieve. The market is full of options, just search on Pinterest for paper Pom Pom decorations and you will see what I mean. These pom poms can actually look more elegant then balloons and they are recyclable!

Catering for dietary requirements

This trend is another ever growing one, and is related to the understanding of diets and a move away from serving only your typical protein and carbs at events.

Dietary requirements covers intolerances, such as gluten free or lactose intolerant, to lifestyle choices such as vegan and vegetarian.

Venues and caterers are now much more flexible and adventurous when it comes to providing for those with dietary requirements and simply providing a salad as an alternative is no longer deemed satisfactory. As a vegetarian myself I am happy to see this trend progressing!

Cupcakes

This trend has been around for a while and shows no sign of going away. Cupcake towers in place of a typical celebration cake are still as popular as ever. A client once asked me why they are so popular and I commented that “they allow everyone equally a little piece of everything on the cake that everyone loves – the sponge, the filling and the decoration fondant – no one gets stuck with an end slice that’s all fondant or the middle piece with no filling! Also if you don’t want to serve them at the party they double as a lovely attendance gift for a guest; giving hosts double bang for their buck.

Children’s party bags

Children love party bags, we all know that! And trends like this will never really go away. However I do think the move towards ‘less is more’ is something we are increasing seeing in regards to children’s party bags. This year for my sons 4th birthday I didn’t do a party bag but handed out a themed sticker/activity book to each child as a left. Another party we attended the children were given a choice of a book that was related to the party theme. Less can certainly be more!

So let’s see if my predications are correct and if these trends are still trending by the end of 2019 and what new trends 2020 might bring!
